Amateur female detectives get a TV stream first thanks to Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson Poker face and now courtesy of Patricia Arquette High Desertis the crazy story of a woman who seeks redemption through a detective career and finds the place of a criminal world. Awakened by a lunatic, drugged, sunburned, faintly evocative New Age-y energy The Big LebowskiNancy Fichman, Katie Ford, and Jennifer Hoppe-House’s Apple TV+ series (released May 17) is devastated in the right ways under Arquette’s crazy, messy, round-de-force leadership of brazen desperation and determination.

directed by Jay Roach (Austin Forces, Meet the Parents) and executive producer Ben Stiller (who previously worked with Arquette). Escape in Dannemora And seniority), High Desert The title is a comedy that should be taken literally. In Yucca Valley, California, criminal Peggy (Arquette) continues to pick up the pieces of a disaster ten years ago when her family was torn apart by a DEA drug bust—while her husband Denny (Matt Dillon) was imprisoned. it ruined their good narco-funded life. Denny stays in jail and Peggy gets away by working for Owen at his local Pioneer Town (Kevin Can Fuck Himself‘S Eric Petersen) as he mourns the recent loss of his beloved mother Rosalyn (Bernadette Peters) and the ongoing separation from her son Ethan.

Furthermore, he is at odds with his siblings Dianne (Christine Taylor) and Stewart (Keir O’Donnell), who see him as an unrepentant dude and want him to move out of their mother’s house so he can sell it.

Adding to Peggy’s troubles, she is a recovering addict trying to stick to a methadone treatment course. Difficulty in maintaining his sobriety, High Desert Peggy’s peculiar zeal is when she routinely finds herself incapable of resisting the acid tablets she’s been hiding from an old narcotics case. The harder it is to stay sane, the harder it is to make sure you don’t get kicked out of your house by your siblings. Luckily, Peggy has a moment of pure inspiration when she sees a television commercial for a research firm run by Bruce (Brad Garrett) that appears just above the research path.

Luckily, he suffers a mysterious fall in his lap when Owen’s safe is searched, and – while suspected of misconduct – he concludes that the robbery has something to do with his co-worker Tammy (a hilarious Susan Park) and Owen. she got new fake breasts the moment she broke up with her boyfriend Guru Bob (Rupert Friend).

High Desert It starts off crazy and gets even crazier when Peggy (despite her initial objections) gets involved in Bruce’s ailing business and starts poking around Guru Bob, a former TV newscaster who made him an infamous viral video name when he went live. “Everything is stupid!” After this professional internal outburst, Guru Bob became a cult-like shaman who traded stolen artworks – but Peggy soon concludes that her priceless paintings weren’t stolen, but rather forgeries.

Not content to keep things simple, Fichman, Ford, and Hoppe-House’s series finally follows a devious plot that traps Peggy’s best friend Carol (Weruche Opia) as she deals with a delinquent teenage stepdaughter (Jayden Gomez) and Arman (Carlo). weaves a web. Not happy to be swindled by Guru Bob, Rota, a swindler, releases her imposing, nipple-cut daughter, Heather (Julia Rickert), to him.

Surprisingly, that’s not all the series has to offer, as the main narrative involves Peggy trying to make enough money to create her own PI facts and maintain her mother’s farmhouse by collecting a reward for knowledge of Guru’s whereabouts. Bob’s MIA wife Dona (Tonya Glanz), a member of the New York mob family with roots in the Yucca Valley.

High Desert A frenzied swamp of alternate identities, stolen goods, and hallucinogenic visions, Peggy is occasionally beset by acid flashbacks to her time with her mother, where Peters plays with a stunning glitz that helps sell the extraordinary place she’s in. her daughter’s head and heart. Peters also appears in a secondary role, a Rosalyn-like role who is actually a TV actress (it’s complicated!). However, in one of the series’ few missteps, it’s still a bit underused; A little more presence of Peters would have enlivened the judgment even more.

Fortunately, the mastery of Fichman, Ford, and Hoppe-House is changing. High Desert it turns into a mix of bright, sunny neo-noir and cartoonish depraved ridiculousness. Arquette is at the center of the series’ swirl from start to finish, embodying Peggy as a source of wellness and conspiracy theory frenzy, brash arrogance, and unwavering determination—not to mention a mournful figure of sadness she’s cured with illegal substances. and mindless games with his ex-girlfriend Denny, who soon comes to her doorstep.

Arquette’s Peggy is both a fully realized three-dimensional hero and a uniquely absurd creation, and the actress’s performance is so specific and confident that it serves as a playful axis around which the rest of the frenzy revolves.

everyone else High Desert Garrett as a pathetic detective forced to tie his fortune to his extraordinary new employee, Garrett as a deep-rooted vagrant who shares a deep, gaping bond with Peggy, and Friend as a crook (or is it?) in a teepee and more than a few tablets of LSD. trading with self-help. Better still, the frenzy of the series rarely feels compelling; it wobbles and wobbles with alarming vitality, not overlooking the emotional traumas that compel its protagonist to his dangerous mission.

There are times when the plot gets a little too complicated and messy, but even then it feels in tune with Peggy’s headspace marred by drugs, grief, regret, and a frantic desire to prove that she is more than a disaster. with a one-way ticket to loneliness and destruction.

During eight half-hour installments, High Desert It creates its own distinctively messy, arid crime niche, confirming that no one currently does a better (and more diverse) job on television than Arquette. Peggy’s mind can be cloudy at times, but thanks to her bright star, Apple TV+’s latest is an open-minded comic book success.
