This year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inauguration will be one of the books.
On Wednesday, the foundation announced its 2023 nominees in the actress category, which include Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.
Chaka Khan, Al Kooper and Bernie Taupin will receive the award for excellence, while DJ Kool Herc and Link Wray prepare to receive the musical impact award.
This year’s Ahmet Ertegun award, which is given to “non-performing industry professionals who have had a great impact on the creative development and growth of rock and roll and music that have influenced youth culture,” will be presented to Don Cornelius.
“This year’s incredible band of Inductees reflects the diverse artists and voices that have defined rock & roll,” John Sykes, President of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a press release. “We are honored that the Initiation Ceremony, which will be held in New York this November, coincides with two milestones in music culture: Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday and Hip Hop’s 50th anniversary.”
Nominees for this year’s ceremony included Crow, Michael, The White Stripes, Elliott, Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, A Tribe Called Quest, Warren Zevon, Soundgarden, The Spinners, Bush and Joy Division/New Order .
Elliott and The White Stripes entered the list in the first year of their eligibility. Other first-time nominees include Crow, Lauper, Michael, Nelson, Zevon and Joy Division/New Order.
Speaking with PEOPLE at the American Heart Association Red Dress Collection Concert in New York in February, the “Strong Enough” singer talked about her latest nomination.
“I’m still a little shocked,” 60-year-old Crow said at the time.
“I feel like I’ve been nominated for an Oscar for a movie that’s 30 years old. That’s really cool. I’m really honored,” he added.
Last year’s nominees in the actor category included Lionel Richie, Duran Duran, Pat Benatar, Eminem, Eurythmics and Carly Simon.
The 38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Initiation Ceremony will take place on Friday, November 3 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
