John Mellencamp expresses regrets that Meg Ryan had a bad boyfriend.
talk to Esquire In an interview published Tuesday, the “It Hurts So Good” singer took full responsibility for the end of the tumultuous relationship that officially ended in 2019.
“I love Meg Ryan. I went with her for 10 years. She doesn’t really like me,” Mellencamp, 71, told the outlet. “She’s a great girl. I’m just s—– my boyfriend,”
When they first started dating, Mellencamp was in love with her and sleepless in Seattle The 61-year-old actress had both just come out of her “shell”.
“Meg Ryan had just come out of her shell, and I had just come out of my shell. We started coming out. And we decided to do something on our own instead of having people do things for us,” she shared. “We were lost. We didn’t know how to do anything.”

Mellencamp continued, “I’ve never left a hotel alone. We went to a grocery store with him and they asked for our credit card and they looked at each other and said, ‘Here it is,’ and they said, ‘No, you have to put it in this thing,’ and ‘What happens next? ?’ “We said. We laughed at how stupid we were, we cried a lot. I think he learned to do everything and I learned to do nothing.”
The Indiana-born artist and Connecticut native originally dated for three years before resigning in August 2014. At the time they broke up, a source told PEOPLE that “distance” had caused the relationship to end. They later reconciled.
The couple got back together a few months after their initial separation, but Mellencamp continued dating Christie Brinkley for over a year.
Just two months before they were reunited, Mellencamp said that Ryan “hated it”. [him] During an interview with Howard Stern”.
“Oh, women hate me,” Mellencamp said. “I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death.
When Stern asked why the actress “hated” the singer, Mellencamp replied, “I think it’s because I’m a kid. I’m having seizures, whining, complaining. I’m grumpy. Every bad thing a man can be, he’s me.”

PEOPLE said they quit the job a year after their engagement in 2019. “She didn’t want to get married again,” said an insider of Mellencamp, who has been married three times before.
“She loves him, but marriage has never been a part of it,” the source continued. “It’s unclear how important a marriage is to Meg. But they’ve spent so much time together and it’s too bad they broke up. They really got along really well together.”

elsewhere on tuesday Esquire In an interview, the smug singer-songwriter expressed how “bad” he thought his first recordings were.
“If you had listened to some of my first albums, why did you keep going?” you would ask. said Mellencamp, who is now on a successful North American tour 47 years after starting his music career. “My first recordings were that bad. My first pictures were that bad. Horrible. But I kept going.”
As for what he’s good at, he joked, “I’m a really good smoker.”
