Top 10 Most Overrated Video Games of All Time

Very often the hype surrounding a game is so tremendous that you hardly wait to read the reviews or talk to someone who has played it but spend hard-earned bucks on getting the first copy! Only to realize that it contains crude aesthetics, it’s concepts are half-baked or that it is simply boring beyond belief. Take a look at our list of the top ten most overrated video games at all times and see if your pick makes it to the list!

10. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within

Who can forget the design, wonderful story line and the charm of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time? The Prince of Persia had everyone rooting for him. However, the success of the game did not move the game forward; instead, the creators made everything in the new version of the game – Warrior Within – extreme. The music was no longer Persian but more like hard rock, the level of violence increased, the Prince turned too obnoxious and the game was frankly unplayable.

9. Halo

Halo: Combat Evolved, may be one of the Xbox’s most favorite games of all times but the fact remains that the design levels are repetitive making it fairly boring after a while and having to play a multiplayer game with a split screen is a definite turn-off. Sure, Halo is not a bad game but when you compare it with the improvements in Halo 2 or Halo 3, you will have to agree it is a little overrated.

8. Super Mario Sunshine

Super Mario 64 was an incredible success and there had been huge expectations from the next release in the Mario series. While Super Mario Sunshine is adequate by itself, it showed no sense of innovation leaving everyone a little disappointed.

7. Daikatana

If you had to compare the hype surrounding various games before the release, Daikatana probably ranks right at the top. The reputation of the developer, John Romero, responsible for the hugely successful Doom, preceded him and everyone expected him to come with something even more impressive than Doom. Unfortunately, nothing in the game – neither the weapons nor the action scenes – stood up to all the hype.

6. Mortal Kombat

True, Mortal Kombat was an instant hit when it was released. And though there were some refreshing perspectives as far as the fights were concerned, the main attraction of the game seems to be the level of gore in it – in fact, gamers can execute defeated competitors in the most violent manner. With not much in terms of gameplay and highly flashy at times, Mortal Kombat remains an overrated game.
