5. Britney Spears: School Girl Uniform
The idea of Britney wearing a school girl uniform revealing her well toned abs is hers. The label actually wanted her to wear pants and stand over a vynil record while she sings. She thought it was lame.
She was right.
The costume has long been popular in Japan but was never a mainstream trend in the US because, naturally, school girl uniforms were identified with kids. Spears changed that. School girl uniforms are to be identified with sex, glam and pop culture.
4. Marilyn Monroe: White Dress
William Travilla first met Marilyn in 1950 when she asked if she could borrow his fitting room – he was one of several contract designers for Twentieth Century Fox – to try on a costume. They have never separated since. He designed all her dresses for the movies Monkey Business (1952), Don’t Bother to Knock, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, There’s No Business Like Show Business, River of No Return, The Seven Year Itch, and Bus Stop.
Travilla designed all of Marilyn’s most memorable and controversial costumes including the gowns she wore at the 1953 Photoplay awards, the sheer gold lame dress in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and the little white dress in her most iconic pose ever – Marilyn standing over a blower with her dress rising up revealing her underwear. Most of her clothes were, for her time, deemed inappropriate for national TV.
Marilyn autographed a nude calendar for Travilla with the words, “Billy Dear, please dress me forever. I love you, Marilyn.”
3. Michael Jackson: White Socks, Hat & Pants
The inspiration for this iconic piece came from The Moonwalk dance. It became popular after Michael Jackson did the dance move during a performance of “Billie Jean” on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. See video below.
MJ was already known for his dancing moves and a lot of dances involve feet movement. They decided to cut his black pants shorter than usual, make his socks white, and his shoes black. Now, if that doesn’t call attention, I don’t know what will.
2. The Beatles: THE Suit & THE Boots
When Brian Epstein took on The Beatles as his talent, he required them to ditch their leather jackets and start wearing suits and boots. John Lennon resisted it believing that leather jackets are what rock stars are supposed to wear. Epstein insisted his way saying the suit will help them become popular.
Both of them were right.
The suit helped them become popular and leather jackets are for rock stars. The thing is, they are not just rock stars, they’re legends.
