5. Abraham Lincoln & Joshua Fry Speed
In 1837, Abraham Lincoln (aged 28) met Joshua Fry Speed (aged 23) when Lincoln moved to Springfield Illinois to set himself up as a lawyer. Lincoln tried to buy a bed from Speed’s store on credit, but Speed offered to share his room and bed instead. Previously Speed had heard the young Lincoln speak on the stump when Lincoln was running for election to the Illinois legislature, but the two men had exchanged only bits of conversation.
The two ended up having a lifelong friendship, and upon the death of Lincoln, Speed and other members of his family put up funding to create a Lincoln Memorial.
The bizarre nature of this relationship is not that the two shared a bed, but that it is an example of a now extinct version of “Romantic Friendship” – a term that described an intimate, but non-sexual relationship between two people.
4. George Harrison & Eric Clapton
Harrison was married to Pattie Boyd he developed a friendship with Eric Clapton. Clapton pursued Boyd in Harrison’s face until he succeeded.
Their friendship was so strong, they remained best of friends even after that.
3. Mackenzie Phillips & Dad John Phillips
Mackenzie reported getting drunk and high with her dad for years and waking up while on tour with him with her pants around her ankles, which was just one instance of a long consensual affair. Sisters Chynna and Bijou Phillips have corroborated Mackenzie’s incest, which ended after an abortion when she didn’t know if the baby’s father was her boyfriend or her dad. Mackenzie forgave John Phillips five years ago on his death bed.
Actress Mackenzie Phillips told Oprah that her father, John Phillips, raped her when she was a teenager. Mackenzie says the abuse continued for 10 years, and that she began to believe that their sexual relationship was consensual, even when she, a heroin and cocaine addict for years, went to rehab with her father.
“I boxed it away,” Mackenzie said. “I started very early on in my life compartmentalizing, boxing away difficult memories, difficult experiences.” She says she was 17 or 18 when her father first sexually abused her; now 49, she says she’s spent the last three decades trying to get over the abuse, which has affected her relationships with men as well as her multiple attempts at sobriety.
2. Jerry Lee Lewis & Myra Gale Brown
Rocker Jerry Lee Lewis committed a host of unspeakable sins when he married Myra Gale Brown in 1957. First, she was just 13 years old.
Second, she was his cousin (technically, the daughter of his first cousin, but still quite a close blood relation).
And third, at the time of the marriage, Lewis was still married to another woman. Lewis and Brown had two children (one of whom drowned as a toddler) during their 13 year marriage.
Guess that’s about the only part of this story that was fitting – he married her at age 13, and they were married for 13 years. Then again, when your relationship is doomed from the start, seeing lots of unlucky 13’s pop up is par for the course.
