Yesterday, my dog took my pants off. Apparently, it was already 5:30 and I was still in bed. He knew I should be running at 5:15. I don’t know how he figured that out but he just did.
That’s how great pets are. They just know things that even humans sometimes can’t figure out. It is not surprising that they display an incredible amount of loyalty and heroism. Unlike humans, animals are programmable to become good and when they get to that mode, they stick to it. Again, unlike humans.
Below are some of the most heroic animals we have had the pleasure of knowing.
10. Magic the Miniature Mare
Magic, a blue-eyed mare, is like Santa Claus without the gifts.
He goes around hospitals and homes to visit patients. He has been doing it for a long time but one event changed his life and how people was bound to see him. Magic went to visit an assisted-living facility. He goes to someone who hasn’t spoken to anyone in years. The moment the patient laid eyes on Magic, the patient said, “Isn’t she beautiful?”
The staff in the home cried.
9. Japanese Rescue Dog
We are still haunted by the horror of the Japan earthquake that hit on March 11. One of the things that lifted our hearts was the scene of a haggard dog standing guard and protecting an injured companion in the middle of a mutilated landscape, occasionally offering a comforting stroke of the paw.
The dog refused to leave the injured one until the injured dog was taken to a clinic.
8. Moko the Dolphin
In the summer of 2008, Moko the bottlenose dolphin was a constant fixture at a beach along the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, coming by every few days to play with swimmers.
Her leisure trip turned into a rescue mission when two beached pygmy sperm whales found themselves in shallow water threatening their life. Humans couldn’t do anything until Moko used some language no men could speak to coax the whales to deep water.
7. Simon the Cat
Simon the Cat is British Royal Navy cat. When he was hit by a shrapnel as a result of an attack by Chinese Communist forces, many thought he wouldn’t make it. The damage to his leg and back were severe.
But like a true navy, he recovered and wiped out a massive rodent infestation on board the ship, eventually taking down an enormous rat the sailors named Mao Tse Tung. He even managed to garner a TIME obit. In August 1949, Simon was awarded the Dickin Medal, which honors animals in wartime.
6. Trakr the Dog
Trakr is a police dog. Some of his achievements include helping to find more than $1 million in contraband. He retired in May 2001 but he and his trainer, Canadian police officer James Symington, drove 15 hours to help recovery efforts in New York City following the Sept. 11 attacks. Trakr was credited with locating the last survivor found beneath the rubble.
Two days after arriving and searching for survivors the entire time, Trakr collapsed from smoke inhalation, exhaustion and burns and was treated for his injuries before returning to Canada. Later in life Trakr suffered from a degenerative neurological disorder that experts say could have been caused by his work at Ground Zero.
