5. Here You Go
June 4, 2000: Game 7 vs. Portland Western Conference finals.
Everyone remembers the alley-oop dunk to Shaq and it is clear why. It was a rare moment. Rare because the level of difficulty of a play like that requires two players with some hardcore skill to execute. Two of the best did it, Shaq and Kobe.
The other side, however, is that Kobe had 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four blocked shots. Shaq had 18 points. Kobe was the leader on the floor and Kobe carried the team to victory.
4. Killing Machine
He scored 50 plus points four consecutive times that carried his team to victory each time – 65, 50, 60 and 50, in that order. In the fifth game, the Warriors held him down to 43. Yes, they call 43 points a “hold down”.
Well, he had an advantage. He was well-rested because he was suspended for hitting Ginobili and Jaric. Bad Kobe!
3. Kobe 62, Dallas 61
The day was December 20, 2005. Kobe outscored the entire Dallas team in three quarters. I honestly don’t know what to say. Is there anything that comes close to this? Has this ever happened before? Will this be ever done again?
2. First Ring
The doctors kept him from playing most of Game 2 and all of Game 3 of the 2000 finals against Indiana for a badly sprained ankle.
He returned in Game 4 to score eight points in OT including a tip in of Shaw’s miss with only several seconds remaining sealing Lakers’ victory all the while suffering the pain. They won the title in Game 6. They have not stopped.
