5. Saving Private Ryan – Omaha Beach Landing
![]()
Though you might feel a little sickened after watching the massacre of American soldiers, this is certainly one of the most realistic depictions of what truly went down that day at the Omaha Beach Landing.
4. The Patriot – Battle of Cowpens Courthouse
![]()
The Battle of Cowpens Courthouse is believed to be one of the most decisive battles fought in the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution and is said to have forced General Cornwallis along with his British soldiers to retreat to Yorktown. This battle conveys the immense desire and passion of the American people to be free at last from British rule.
3.Braveheart – Battle of Stirling
![]()
To this day, the depiction of the Battle of Stirling is regarded as one of the finest in movie history. With Mel Gibson leading from the front as the hero, Braveheart, the battle scenes are awe-inspiring and gut-wrenching at the same time.
2.Troy – The Big Battle
![]()
Troy has quite a few impressive battle scenes – a new one outshining the one before it in sheer scale and visual effects. All the small battles however, are just a build up to the final, most impressive one where the Trojan horse is revealed and the war reaches its climax.

you forgot “We Were Soldiers”
The only two battles listed above that was based on real events are #5 & #7. In SPR they took first hand accounts from the six hour Omaha Beach landing and consolidated them into the scene. It is the most realistic, and by far the most “epic” battle scene ever produced. In Tora*3 they attempted to recreate the battle as accurately as possible, and given the technology at the time, it was fantastic.
The Battle of Stirling Bridge didn’t even closely resemble what was portrayed in Braveheart (it was fought at an actual bridge where the English forces were bottlenecked).
The Gladiator scene was a joke compared to Saving Private Ryan.
Um, the battle in The Patriot was patterned after Cowpens, not Guilford.
thanks for the heads up… fixed!
There were elements from both Cowpens and Guilford Courthouse. Still good though.
you forgot 300
I’d have included the closing battle scene from “We Were Soldiers..” It was strictly fiction, but it was great.
