It is not true that as long as something is not violent, it is not abuse. Neglect and emotional abuse can be just as damaging, and since they are more subtle, others are less likely to intervene.
It is also not true that most abusers are strangers. Most of the time, abusers are family members. They are often the ones you wouldn’t suspect. They don’t look it, they don’t sound it.
No one is spared. Not even celebrities. But as what this list will prove, not everyone who has been abused end up becoming criminals or abusers themselves. Most of them end up ok.
10. Darren Hayes
Darren Hayes of Savage Garden never talked about growing up marred by alcohlism and domestic violence. He said that he chose not to out of respect for his family. He said that he was unable to trust anyone as a result of that and had a hard time maintaining a romantic relationship.
However, he said that he has forgiven his family and he admires them for owning up to their mistakes, changing and moving on.
9. Tom Petty
Tom Petty’s father was a guy’s guy. His father didn’t understand his passion for music. His father thought he was gay and beat the living hell out of him. As Petty refused to join his father in hunting trips, his father’s beating escallated.
8. Mike Patton
Mike Patton is known for his wild antics on stage. Other rockstars are criticised for not respecting their audience. Patton has no respect for others and himself. He asks people to spit on his mouth, darn it.
His eratic behavior may be because of the sexual abuse and neglect he experienced when he was a kid. Or it may be because he is simply a rock star.
7. Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou has talked about her abuse as a child extensively.
At such a young age Maya had to deal with many issues such as her rape and her identity as a black person. At one point in her life, she even worked as a prostitute and madam.
She has channeled her emotions on her poetry.
6. Billy Connoly
Billy Connoly’s wife learned about him being a gang leader only through therapy where she was his shrink.
The incident happened on the one-off special Dr Pamela Stephenson Connolly, a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist who specialises in treating sexual disorders, put her husband on the couch for an hour as part of her More4 Shrink Rap television series.
Connolly was being grilled by his psychotherapist wife on being abused as a child, abandoned by his mother and his alcoholism but she got more than what she bargained for after he revealed being a gang leader.

You clearly know nothing whatsoever about Mike Patton beyond a couple of second hand stories you’ve probably heard somewhere. Guy may sometimes be confrontational and enjoy goading others, but he’s also got an impressive work ethic and has collaborated with a massive number of people in the music, film and video games industries. But obviously you’ve heard one of two things that upset your very delicate sensibilities.
and done fades away, but feelings ireamn. Nicky- Thank you for your kind comment. I wish I could say that I was always as positive as my writing indicates. But I do learn by repetition.Meleah- I don’t think I had thought about it that way either. I think these quotes are to help me as much as everyone else.Sweet Potatoes- Not sure I get the selfish part. Our words and deeds can affect others in either a positive or negative way which they will remember.
Ken Frazier – Amanda, I’m Mary’s brother and I just watned to say this was a beautiful blog and the pictures are very touching. I got to spend a little bit of time with Mason Monday evening several hours after his first surgery. I appreciate the time you’ve taken with my sister and Mason, it has been such an impact for her with the support and information so she (and the rest of us) have a grasp on the challenges and the hope we face. Thank you, Ken
Mark, while I agree with your list, I do wish celebrities, ereardlgss of their political leanings, would just STFU and sing or act or whatever. Yes maybe they were meant to express themselves, but I just don’t see how learning to memorize lines and deliver them convincingly lays any credibility to that person’s political positions. The exception to that would be comedians, who often weave politics into their material. And while I find your list of conservatives far more irritating than the list of liberals over all, I find Garafalo to be incessantly irritating because she could find racism in white rice and I dislike Michael Moore because he appears to lead off his documentaries with his mind made up about the subject, then carefully crafts them to make sure he proves his point (even those I agree with).
Mike Patton is actually really good to his fans. He respects them. He’s an anti-rockstar but he respects his fans. I’ve been to 5 of his shows since 2009 and an autograph signing in 2007. He’s down-to-earth and decent in his interactions with fans.
