Digg it!If there is anything common on all Oscar® speeches of women, it is the depth of their sincerity. I guess it comes with women being more able to handle and express their emotions better.
There are really more speeches that should be recognized but I only have space for 10 plus an Honorable mention.
10. Whoopi Goldberg
Goldberg briefly thanked several people and made a touching end by thanking the movie industry in general for inspiring her to dream. We all know of Whoopi’s history and how she has always been the actress that is “difficult to cast” because of her unorthodox image. Seeing her receive the award and hearing her thank the industry, you know it means more to her than anyone can ever understand.
The Speech Highlight: As a little kid, I lived in the projects and you’re the people I watched. You’re the people who made me want to be an actor. I’m so proud to be here.
9. Marion Cotillard
Maybe it was her difficulty speaking English that made her speech one of the most charming in the history of Academy® Awards. She won for her role in La Vie en Rose
The Speech Highlight: You rocked my life… Thank you love, thank you life and it is true there are some angels in this city.
8. Nicole Kidman
Kidman won at a time when America was experiencing so much turmoil and controversy on the political end. There was so much criticism on the movie industry’s decision to proceed as if nothing was happening. The best actress winner addressed this in her speech.
The Speech Highlight: Why do you come to the academy awards when the world is in such turmoil, because art is important and you believe in what you do and you want to honor that.
7. Marketa Irglova
Irglova won an Academy for Best Original Song with Glen Hansard. Hansard spoke briefly thanking the Academy® and the industry for taking seriously this small film they made for less than a hundred dollars and quickly turned over to Irglova but the orchestra played and she didn’t get a chance to speak. God bless John Stewart for bringing her back. Maybe it’s the music lover in me but her simple dedication to all musicians made this speech so touching for me.
The Speech Highlight: This is for those all other independent musician and artist who spend most of their time struggling. Fair play to those who dare to dream.
6. Sandra Bullock
Before the controversies on her personal life, there was the great speech for her Best Actress role in Blind Side. Bullock who has always been made fun of because of her choices of roles finally garnered the overdue respect her peers should have given her a long time ago.
The Speech Highlight: If I can take this moment to thank Helga B. for not letting me ride in cars with boys until I was 18 because she was right, I would’ve done what she said I was gonna do. For making me practice every day when I got home. Piano, ballet, whatever it is I wanted to be. She said to be an artist, you had to practice every day, and for reminding her daughters that there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love.
