5. Russell Crowe
The bad boy of Hollywood was at his most vulnerable that night, talking about the “vaguely ludacris” dream of a small boy from a suburb to one day make it in Hollywood and addressing everyone who is watching to continue dreaming. He has never made a speech in any of his movies half as powerful as this.
The Speech Highlight: When you grow up in the suburbs… a dream like this seem kind of vaguely ludacris and completely unattainable… To anybody who is on the downside of advantage and who relying purely on courage, it’s possible.
4. Roberto Benigni
Roberto Benigni’s speech was brief and more humorous than anything else because this great guy barely speaks English. His speech was dominated with “Thank yous” and laughter. The great moment happened when his name was announced. Instead of walking or running to the stage, he climbed on top of the seats and on top of the heads of guests as he makes his way to the stages. He caused a pandemonium in the house. He single-handedly made everyone feel good that night.
The Speech Highlight: This is terrible mistake because I used up all my English.
3. Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks Best Actor trophy for Philadelphia in 1993 articulated the agony of the victims of AIDS. It is one of the most moving acceptance speeches in Oscar® history.
The Speech Highlight: I know that my work in this case is magnified by the fact that the streets of heaven are too crowded with angels. We know their names. They number a thousand for each one of the red ribbons that we wear here tonight. They finally rest in the warm embrace of the gracious creator of us all, a healing embrace that cools their fevers, that clears their skin, and allows their eyes to see the simple, self-evident commonsense truth that is made manifest by the benevolent creator of us all.
2. Joe Pesci
In 1990, Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for “Goodfellas.” His speech is the shortest I have ever witnessed but one of the most sincere.
The Speech Highlight: It was my privilege. Thank you.
