If they are not listed with SAG, you have to be cautions and I would actually recommend you staying away because the only sure way you will get the full priveleges of working for the entertainment industry is if the Union backs you up.

There are other movies that broke the barriers, broke the grounds, set the tone… these are the movies that had the balls to become the first… first in treatment, first in story, first in other aspects that inspired and proved to others that crazy things can be done.

10. Sorta The First Motion Picture

The First Motion Picture Ever Made – The Horse In Motion (1878)

If you want to be strict about it, this is more a motion photography than a movie. Eadweard Muybridge’s used multiple cameras and assembled the individual pictures into a motion picture. Putting one photo after the other made it appear as if it was moving.

Actually, Muybridge was commissioned by Leland Stanford (California governor/ Stanford University) to scientifically answer a popularly debated question during this era – are all four of a horse’s hooves ever off the ground at the same time while the horse is galloping? Muybridge’s time-motion photography proved they indeed were, and the idea of motion photography was born.

Just to be clear about it, the “official” First Home Movie Ever Made was Roundhay Garden Scene (1888) because the Roundhay Garden Scene is thought to be the oldest surviving film on record. The Roundhay Garden Scene was directed by the French inventor, Louis Le Prince and features some members of Le Prince’s family playfully walking around a garden. The film lasts about two seconds.

9. First Animated Movie

• The first animated projection (screening) was created in France, by Charles-Émile Reynaud, who was a French science teacher. Reynaud created the Praxinoscope in 1877 and the Théâtre Optique in December 1888. On 28 October 1892, he projected the first animation in public, Pauvre Pierrot, at the Musée Grévin in Paris. This film is also notable as the first known instance of film perforations being used. His films were not photographed, but drawn directly onto the transparent strip.
• The first (photographed) animated projection was “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces” (1906) by newspaper cartoonist J. Stuart Blackton, one of the co-founders of the Vitagraph Company arrived. In the movie, a cartoonist’s line drawings of two faces were ‘animated’ (or came to life) on a blackboard. The two faces smiled and winked, and the cigar-smoking man blew smoke in the lady’s face; also, a circus clown led a small dog to jump through a hoop.
• The first animated projection in the traditional sense (i.e., on motion picture film) was “Fantasmagorie” by the French director Émile Cohl in 1908. This was followed by two more films, “Le Cauchemar du fantoche” ["The Puppet's Nightmare", now lost] and “Un Drame chez les fantoches” ["A Puppet Drama", called "The Love Affair in Toyland" for American release and "Mystical Love-Making" for British release], all completed in 1908.
• The first animated feature movie was El Apóstol, an Argentine movie that was made in 1917, with a duration of 70 min, and which is considered a lost film. In the 1930s to 1960s, theatrical cartoons were produced in huge numbers, and usually shown before a feature film in a movie theater. MGM, Disney, Paramount and Warner Brothers were the largest studios producing these 5 to 10-minute “shorts”.

8. The First Live Action Actor and Animated Character Interaction

Gertie the Dinosaur did it first.

The narrator appears to throw a real orange which is caught by Gertie (the real orange is replaced by an animated one just as it leaves the narrator’s hand), and the film climaxes with a scene in which the narrator enters the animated landscape (again, replaced by an animated version) and takes a ride on the famous dinosaur’s back.

7. First Movie with Sound

The Jazz Singer was mostly silent but it had bits and that had sound. It was released 1927.

There were earlier efforts to put a sound in the film but the problem on synchronization and sufficient amplification were always the problem. Jazz Singer broke the barrier.

6. First Double Exposure

This was first done by G.A. Smith in July 1898 in the UK in the Corsican Brothers was described in the catalogue of the Warwick Trading Company, which took up the distribution of Smith’s films in 1900, thus: A scene inset inside a circular vignette showing a “dream vision” in Santa Claus (1899)

G.A. Smith:

“One of the twin brothers returns home from shooting in the Corsican mountains, and is visited by the ghost of the other twin. By extremely careful photography the ghost appears *quite transparent*. After indicating that he has been killed by a sword-thrust, and appealing for vengeance, he disappears. A ‘vision’ then appears showing the fatal duel in the snow. To the Corsican’s amazement, the duel and death of his brother are vividly depicted in the vision, and finally, overcome by his feelings, he falls to the floor just as his mother enters the room.”

The ghost effect was simply done by draping the set in black velvet after the main action had been shot, and then re-exposing the negative with the actor playing the ghost going through the actions at the appropriate point. Likewise, the vision, which appeared within a circular vignette or matte, was similarly superimposed over a black area in the backdrop to the scene, rather than over a part of the set with detail in it, so that nothing appeared through the image, which seemed quite solid. Smith used this technique again a year later in Santa Claus.

Georges Méliès first used superimposition on a dark background in la Caverne maudite (The Cave of the Demons) made a couple of months later in 1898, and then elaborated it further with multiple superimpositions in the one shot in l’Homme de têtes (The Troublesome Heads). He then did it with further variations in numerous subsequent films.
